This book is an interesting read, especially for those unfamiliar with Japanese cultures or lifestyles. It is a touching exploration of the situation faced by offspring of mixed marriages. The main plot of the story (as so thought at the beginning) is sidelined towards the centre of the novel as we realise or at least come close to assuming the author's true intention that is to show the transformation or rather the development of certain characteristics in the hero that were never seen before. The style of the novelist ( simple, straightforward and real) makes the novel quite unputdownable. Right from the beginning, it leaves at the end of each chapter wanting more. A leisure read although the gruesome details of fights and killings in the explosion between the Mafia and the Yakuza are quite vivid. the novel proves in the end that reacting only when acted upon is most rewarding. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

THE TEMPLE DOGS

It was the climax of a magnificent wedding reception at New York's elegant Inn on the Park.  The happy newlyweds were driving off on their honeymoon when a man stopped their car and without warning shot them dead.

The perpetrator of this brutal slaying was Nick DeSanto, the vicious, violent heir of the most powerful Mafia family in the city, a clan literally above the law.  The murdered bride was Susi Haverford, a beautiful, half-Japanese girl.  And the only one who could avenge her was her brother, Miles Haverford, if this handsome, hedonistic young lawyer would turn his back on his western upbringing and return to his remote family roots in the Japanese underworld.

Thus is set in breakneck motion the sensational new thriller by Warren Murphy and Molly Cochran, best-selling and award-winning authors of Grandmaster.  In this exciting tale of family honor and revenge, the audacious imagination and storytelling power of Murphy and Cochran yield the ultimate war of the underworlds -- between a mighty Mafia family and the awesome Yakuza clan.

Sweeping from the glittering hurly-burly of modern Manhattan and Tokyo to ancient training grounds for time-hallowed rites of passage, and featuring a wily and ruthless godfather in collision with a wise and iron-willed Yakuza chieftain, THE TEMPLE DOGS pits two codes of life, and two modes of delivering death, against each other.  As the struggle mounts step by savage step, the avenging hero, Miles Haverford, undergoes the ordeal of learning the deadly arts that Yakuza must master to survive, and seeks to overcome the suspicion and hostility his mixed blood breeds.  But it is his love for the exquisite Japanese girl, pledged to a Yakuza rival, that may well destroy him.
