You've hit the target with this essay. I have always believed that story is the most important thing to human beings. We build our personal psyches, our family histories, our cultures, our religions, and our governments on the stories we weave and share with each other. Siblings in a family will often have radically different views of their childhood years based on the stories they have woven for themselves and for others from whom they want love, admiration, fear, etc. Each religion has a story which the worshippers must accept if they are true believers. Every government has woven the tale of its nation to suit its aims and beliefs and those who are governed are spoon-fed that story. If we were only aware that our lives are composed of remembered events, sculpted to our personal needs and desires, packaged in the most "consumer-friendly" way, and shared with those we hope to influence, we might be able to do a little editing of the story and adjust our perspective and direction in life.
